The practical coaching interview — what assessors actually look for, how to pick your demo topic, a 15-minute structure that works, and the questions that follow.
You've made the shortlist. Now comes the part nobody enjoys: coaching a session in front of the people deciding whether to hire you.
The practical interview — often called a session demonstration or coaching trial — is where most coaching interviews are actually won and lost. And here's the good news: it's much less about tactics than people expect.
The assessors watching your session are usually answering four questions:
Notice what's not on the list: tactical genius. Nobody expects a 20-minute demo session to reveal the next Pep Guardiola. They're looking for a coach who can run a safe, organised, enjoyable session on a wet Tuesday with players they've never met.
Play to your strengths, not to what sounds impressive. If you're great with young kids, show that. If pressing triggers are your thing, show that. But follow three rules:
1. Keep it simple. One theme, one clear outcome. "Improving 1v1 attacking" is a topic. "Possession, pressing and switching play" is three sessions crammed into one.
2. Match the age group. Ask in advance who you'll be coaching. A session for 7-year-olds should look completely different from a session for 16-year-olds — and assessing panels notice when coaches don't adjust.
3. Practise it beforehand. Deliver your demo session to your own team first. The difference between a session you've run five times and one you've written on paper is enormous.
You won't get an hour. A tight window works like this:
Most practicals end with a short interview. Expect:
Treat the demo as a real session, not a performance. The coaches who get hired are rarely the flashiest — they're the ones who looked after the players in front of them, adapted when things wobbled, and finished on time with a group of kids who left smiling.
And if you plan sessions week in, week out with a proper structure — warm-up, practice blocks, game context, coaching points — the demo is just another Tuesday.
