Matchday Is More Than a Game: How to Make It Count for Every Player
Players remember how the game felt, not just the score. Here's how to make matchday inspirational — before kick-off, during the game, and after the final whistle.
The score isn't the only thing that matters
Ask a player what they remember about a game from last season and they probably won't tell you the score. They'll tell you about the moment they beat a defender, or the goal they scored, or how the coach made them feel at half-time.
Matchday shapes a player's relationship with football. Done well, it builds confidence, enjoyment and a love of the game. Done badly, it does the opposite — regardless of the result.
Before kick-off
Check in with your players. How are they feeling? A quick individual check-in costs 30 seconds and shows players they matter as people, not just footballers.
Give players ownership. Let someone lead the warm-up. Ask a player to give the pre-match talk. When players take responsibility, they invest more in the outcome.
Create consistent routines. Same arrival time, similar warm-up activities, familiar environment. Routines reduce anxiety and help players feel safe to perform.
During the game
Stay back and observe. Resist the urge to shout every instruction. Players learn more when they solve problems themselves.
Catch players doing things well. The acknowledgment of a good decision, a clever run, a brave first touch — these moments build confidence.
Keep substitutes engaged. Ask them to observe specific things. Nobody should be mentally checked out on the sideline.
Half-time is a conversation, not a lecture. Ask the players: how do you think we're doing? Let them lead the analysis.
After the final whistle
Regardless of the result. A heavy defeat shouldn't mean a dressing-down. A big win shouldn't mean complacency. The post-match environment should be consistent — positive, reflective, forward-looking.
Recognise individual moments. Not just goals and assists. The player who tracked back for 80 minutes. Specific, genuine recognition sticks.
Send players home with energy. The last thing a player hears from you shapes how they feel until the next session.
