Individual Development Plans: The Tool That Separates Good Clubs from Great Ones

50% of semi-finalists at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup 2025 had individual development plans for their players. Among group-stage exits, only 17% did. This single tool is the biggest differentiator in the data.

The Stat That Explains Everything

In FIFA's Talent Development Scheme report from the U-17 Women's World Cup Morocco 2025: 50% of players representing semi-finalist teams had an individual development plan (IDP) in place. Among players whose teams exited in the group stage, that figure was just 17%.

A 33-percentage-point gap. The single biggest differentiator in the entire dataset.

The Grassroots Version of an IDP

An effective IDP for a grassroots player doesn't require complex software. It requires intentional attention:

  1. A seasonal goal per player — 2-3 specific things they want to improve
  2. A monthly coaching note — one or two sentences on progress
  3. Brief player feedback sessions — 5 minutes after training
  4. A season-end review

Why IDPs Work

When a player knows their coach has a specific goal in mind for them, they engage differently. They practise with purpose. They take ownership.
